Working from Home

Working from Home

Traditionally some roles have always worked outside the office such as sales, technicians or consultants. In some cases, individuals have worked from home part-time, either to avoid traffic congestion or take care of personal challenges like school strikes. Studies show that almost 50% of the workforce could work from home – effectively.

There are good reasons to put a ‘working from home’ plan in place when organizations run into weather challenges like floods, snow-storms or fires. More recently we have also run into medical challenges like SARS and now, COVID-19. Can your organization continue to do business effectively, if you had to send all your staff home? Most could get by with one, perhaps two days, but beyond that would be challenging. What organizations need are communications tools that can be quickly scaled up to allow effective ‘working from home.’

Savings beyond Telecommuting

Most organizations have viewed working from home exclusively as ‘telecommuting’ – a few people able to avoid traffic congestion. This is a result of surveys and public literature that focus on alternate means of transport – and add in Telecommuting as an option. Today there are more tools available to us and almost everyone has access to high speed internet at home and the road. There are major advantages, including cost savings, that are being missed when viewing these options through such a narrow lens.

Studies in the US showed that someone that working from home only two days a week would save businesses on average around US$11,000 per year per ‘teleworker.’ This would be due to reduced space costs, electricity savings and reduced staff turnover.

Home Workers are More Productive

Surprising, perhaps, but true!

People who from home experience fewer interruptions, work longer hours, feel more like a trusted employee and, with flexible hours, can work when they are most productive.

They experience less stress than office workers and, being less exposed to sick co-workers, take fewer sick days. They put the time saved commuting back into work and personal things like exercise. This is why they have higher morale and, ultimately, are far more productive. Something that will bring hard dollars to any organizations’ bottom line.
